Mushrooms
Most mushrooms species begin to appear in late summer, and fall. However, in spring one of the most searched for mushrooms, the Morel (Morchella esculenta), makes its appearance. Morels can be found under conifers, in old apple orchards, burned-over areas, hardwood forests, and near dead elms.
The Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) is very sought after for its delicious peppery taste. Chanterelles belong to a family which includes many other edible species. The Chanterelle is found throughout North America, on the ground under oaks or conifers, and in mixed woods.
Although many mushrooms are good to eat, others are not. Some inedible mushrooms will only give you a stomach ache; others could kill you. The most dangerous types of mushrooms, are Amanitas. There are a few edible Amaitas, but most are poisonous, and since there is always the risk of a mistake, no Amanita should be eaten.
The most deadly of the Amanitas, is the Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa). The Destroying Angel is found throughout North America, alone or in small clusters, on the ground in coniferous, decidous, or mixed woods. Another Amanita, the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), isn št often deadly, but it is known to produce states of delirium. Since there are so many poisonous mushrooms out there (many of them resembling edible mushrooms), I suggest that you be very careful when picking mushrooms.
