Sarah McLachlan

Sarah Ann McLachlan was born on January 28th, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Unlike most of today's music, McLachlan's music has intimate lyrics that convey a strong message. She explores her own unique musical interests and doesn't follow current trends or fads. Her work is marked by warmth rock and folk. She has a very district, clear voice known by many. Because of this, she has created avid followers and fans, that always await new albums and songs.
Sarah McLachlan studied the classical guitar, the piano and voice at the age of 4. At the age of seventeen, she was discovered by Nettwerk Records while performing with her band. After she relocated to Vancouver she began writing music for her first album, TOUCH. After the release of her first album, Sarah McLachlan's stardom skyrocketed, and she was hailed as that year's most exciting and important new artist. After an extensive tour with her first band, she returned to write her second album, SOLACE.
Later on in her career, Sarah McLachlan realised that most music festivals, were dominated by males, (H.O.R.D.E. and Lollapalooza). McLachlan, then came up with the idea of an all-female festival tour. She borrowed the name of Adam's mythological wife before Eve, and named the tour, Lilith Fair. She then gathered some of her women friends and singers and started planning an eight week tour in the summer of 1997. Joining her were Paula Cole, and Lisa Loeb. When the Lilith Fair came around a second time, there was an impressive line-up of artists: Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, and Indigo Girls. Not only was the Lilith Fair a large success, but a large portion of the proceeds went to charities for abused women. It's estimated, that the charities were given over 600,000$ from the tour.
Even though, Sarah McLachlan had a very busy schedule, she still found time in 1997 to sneak in a bit of personal business. In a secret ceremony held in Jamaica, she got married to her longtime drummer and musical partner, Ashwin Sood. Sarah McLachlan is one of Canada's most successful and known artists. She has won many Grammy awards, and last year, was named by Chatelaine magazine, "Woman of the Year".
